Part-Time

Administrative Assistant to the Executive Director

Part-Time, Year-Round (30 hours per week)

Job Summary:

Reporting directly to the Executive Director (ED), the Executive Assistant provides executive support in a one-on-one working relationship. The Executive Assistant serves as the primary point of contact for internal and external constituencies on matters pertaining to the Office of the Executive Director. The Executive Assistant also serves as a liaison on behalf of the ED to the Board of Directors and senior management; organizes and coordinates executive outreach and external relations efforts; and oversees special projects. The Executive Assistant must be creative and enjoy working within a small, history-based environment that is mission and results driven and community oriented.

This is a part-time year-round position, averaging 30 hours a week. During organizational peak times, this position requires the ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours. In general, the need for coverage of non-traditional hours is known in advance.

Salary: $15 per hour

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or higher
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and completeness.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Google Workspace, and Canva.
  • Experience with non-profits and donor management systems is preferred.
  • Resourceful team player with the ability to work independently.

Seasonal Positions

Museum Front Desk Clerk

April/May to October; Historic White Pine Village & the Port of Ludington Maritime Museum

Mason County Historical Society staff members are committed to providing friendly, courteous service to the public. All work-related tasks will be performed in a professional, competent manner.  Museum Front Desk Clerks serve the visitors to three different venues by selling admission tickets, assisting guests and selling merchandise in museum stores, and providing information to guests about Historic White Pine Village, Port of Ludington Maritime Museum, Mason County Research Center, and the general Mason County area.

Salary: $13.00

Full-time & part-time positions available, seasonal; (flexibility required, includes holidays, weekends, and possible evenings)

Core job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Stocks shelves and processes orders at the Research Center.
  • Enthusiastically greet guests upon arrival.
  • Assist visitors with the selection of appropriate admission tickets.
  • Accurately enter ticket purchases into a computerized cash register.
  • Assist museum store guests with purchases.
  • Accurately enter all museum store purchases into a computerized cash register.
  • Assist with straightening, maintaining, and light cleaning of the Research Center.
  • Study and know all MCHS public programs and facilities, including access issues for visitors with disabilities.
  • Respond to inquiries with information/suggestions to enhance the site and area visits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Seasonal Positions

Village Interpreter

May - October

This position serves Mason County Historical Society as a costumed historical interpreter at Historic White Pine Village during the museum’s summer season. This position is responsible for interpreting the history of the early settler to Mason County, Michigan.

Salary: $14.00 hr

Part-time seasonal; 20 hours a week Tuesday - Saturday (flexibility required, includes some holidays and possible evenings)

Core job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Put our visitors first by treating them as respected guests and serving their needs to provide an enjoyable and educational experience for guests to the Village.
  • Interpreters will teach the history of Mason County’s early settlers to visitors as they tour the Village.
  • Lead or participate in tours and programs discussing the fur trades, farming, lumbering, and the general life of 18th & early 19th-century settlers to Mason County.
  • Interact with visitors in first-person and non-first-person roles to provide an interactive experience that enhances the visitor experience as they seek to understand the times.
  • Participate in tours and special events as needed.
  • Serve ice cream in the Town Hall as needed

Internships

Programming Internship

The Program Coordinator Internship for the Society assists in creating programming for all three Historical Society venues. This position will work directly with the Program Coordinator and Site Managers.

This position helps to facilitate the development of programming for all educational programs, including school field trips, birthday parties, day camps, outreach, and special event programs.

While our internships are unpaid, we offer a $750 stipend upon successful completion of a 3 month internship. College credit may be available through your academic institution.

Core job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Works closely with the Program Coordinator and Site Managers to facilitate programming opportunities.
  • Assist in developing educational programming to reflect the MCHS mission.
  • Assist in facilitating field trip/school programs and guided tours.
  • Execute and oversee programming for adults, families, scouts, schools, and public audiences.
  • Assist in the development of special events.

Internships

Curator/Archivist Internship

The Curator Internship will assist with the care and management of the historical artifacts and archives in the Society’s collection. This position will work directly under the Collections Manager, and in collaboration with museum Site Managers.

This position helps protect and preserve the collection while making it more accessible and resourceful to researchers and the community. Additionally, this position will assist with research-related requests, genealogy requests, and various research-related needs.

While our internships are unpaid, we offer a $750 stipend upon successful completion of a 3 month internship. College credit may be available through your academic institution.

Core job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Collections

  • Cataloging and accessioning items.
  • Data entry into Past Perfect Database.
  • Properly store and hose different types of materials in accordance with archival and museum best practices.
  • Assist with research requests, work with researchers and volunteers, and schedule appointments for research.
  • Assist with the Mason County Ancestry Database.
  • Assist with programming opportunities and tours.
  • Assist with organizing the collection at the new Mason County Research Center.
